It’s been a hot and humid summer, especially for kids attending urban day camps. But as 14 of our Boston teammates recently discovered, steamy weather doesn’t zap the enthusiasm of school-age kids enjoying United South End Settlements (“USES”) Entrepreneur Week. Over two days, our volunteers helped the campers prepare “Shrinky Dink” keychains for sale at their neighborhood marketplace, and several helped out at the live event. The program’s goal is introducing kids to basic business principles, from pitching a product idea to producing their items and creating marketing flyers. This is the third summer our team has enjoyed supporting USES’ young entrepreneurs and as volunteer Jane Crapo noted, “I can’t wait till next time!”
Recently, many of our Connecticut-based teammates helped mulch garden beds at the Chrysalis Center (one of our Community Engagement nonprofit partners) in Hartford, CT. Gardens like this aid with providing fresh vegetables in an otherwise urban food desert. This particular garden consists of 30 raised beds, and once mature, these plants supply food for their Freshplace food pantry and are sold in Homestead Farmers Markets throughout the summer.
For a second consecutive year, our Plymouth Actuarial team handed out fresh produce to the Minneapolis community through NorthPoint Health & Wellness Center. Our team’s time helping NorthPoint set a record for the highest number of guests able to receive food. Intact’s LeeAnn Tomko shares, “working together to package up produce connected us to both our community and our colleagues, so we look forward to volunteering here again soon!”

This summer, 34 employees of our New York City office came together to make a positive impact on the planet by rolling up their sleeves, getting their hands dirty, and partnering with GrowNYC — a hands-on non-profit with a mission to empower New Yorkers by focusing on Food Access & Agriculture, Green Spaces, Zero Waste and Education. GrowNYC promotes regional agriculture, supports regional farmers, builds & supports community gardens, operates zero waste programs, and helps youth and their educators foster a lifelong appreciation of nature, healthy food, and sustainability.
