If a disaster or other emergency strikes your community, you may only have seconds or minutes to react. In those critical moments, your focus will be on your family’s safety. Once the threat of harm has passed, having your homeowners or renters insurance policy, bank account information, and other household records and contacts will be very important as you begin the recovery process. The Emergency Financial First Aid Kit (EFFAK) can help you be ready.

The EFFAK includes checklists of important documents and forms to capture information vital for disaster recovery that fall into the following four categories:

Seasonal Flu

An annual flu vaccine is the best way to reduce your chances of getting the seasonal flu and spreading it to others. CDC recommends that everyone 6 months of age and older receive an annual flu vaccine. For more than 50 years, hundreds of millions of Americans have safely received seasonal flu vaccines. Fire is FAST! In less than 30 seconds a small flame can turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house. Try to not burn the turkey this year, but if you do, open some windows to help the smoke escape the room.

National Preparedness Month

National Preparedness Month is an observance each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time.

Make a Plan

• #PrepareToProtect means preparing to protect everyone you love.
• Discuss with your household or family how you will communicate if there is an emergency.
• Decide and practice your emergency plan with members of your household.
• Houses, mobile homes, apartments, and high-rise buildings have different evacuation considerations. Make sure to know which plan you should follow.
• Involve your entire family, including your children, in the planning for disasters and emergencies so they are prepared, not afraid.
