Joanie Gosselin-Allard

What is your position at Intact/OneBeacon and how long have you held it?
I am a Senior Actuarial Analyst, promoted last year. I have been working for the company for four years now.
What are you working on today?
I am working on the pricing of Omega Commercial P&C. I am preparing for a Rate Committee Meeting where we will discuss potential strategies with the subscription team on how we can improve this line of business.
Tell us a little bit about your background – how did you land in your area of specialty?
I didn’t know what I wanted to do as a career but I always knew that I loved mathematics. I would always tease my mom and say “I want to study mathematics and enjoy it for three years in University” but I had no clue what to do after that. I went to see an academic counsellor and he said that to become an actuary, you have to study mathematics for three years. I knew it was for me!
Since the acquisition and becoming a North American team, what has surprised you the most?
How happy the OneBeacon team is to have joined our big family.
What’s the most complicated or interesting or strangest file you’ve ever worked on?
When I worked on the corporate actuarial team, I had the chance to do an analysis on how the results of the company change during a specific month in a year. We call this the seasonality of the results. We came up with a lot of improvements on this project using modeling. That was a really interesting project.
Who is your hero or mentor and why?
My mother. She always told me to pursue a career that will make me happy. Also, she taught me to fight for women’s rights.

It’s from my cousin’s wedding in Oka, Quebec! My father and I took photos on her wedding day.
