At OneBeacon, we value relationships—with colleagues, customers and producers. Dave Byrom, AVP Business Development for Government Risks, knows the importance of these relationships and how they drive our business, even if business does not materialize immediately.
A few years ago, Dave met Bill McGehee of Bill McGehee Insurance via telephone to discuss an account he had. At the time, Bill had his accounts and lines of business spread out with different effective dates, so he didn’t feel that it was the appropriate time to consider a switch to OneBeacon.
Fast forward to a very cold and wet December morning in 2016 when Dave and OBGR President, Brad York, met Bill in Baton Rouge for lunch. During lunch Bill presented Brad and Dave with a submission, which they took away and through the quick efforts of OBGR Underwriter Carrie Hofer, returned to Bill with a quote within a few days.
Impressed by this fast turnaround, Bill decided to write the account with Government Risks, along with an additional three accounts, two of which were self-insured retention (SIR) accounts. These SIR accounts mean that the insured pays a high deductible before the carrier responds to any losses. Because of this complexity, Dave and Carrie traveled to the insured to present directly to them and discuss the implications of being self-insured. Impressed once again, and appreciative of our team’s dedication and expertise, Bill expressed that he wanted to write more with us.
With Dave’s help and introduction to other OneBeacon businesses, Bill is now also appointed with three other OneBeacon businesses—Environmental, Financial Services and Technology. Dave has acted as a conduit for Bill—he came to pass his business on to the appropriate OneBeacon segment. In total, Bill has contributed business premiums of more than $1.3 million—all resulting from the careful cultivation and maintenance of relationships both inside OneBeacon and out.
We enjoy hearing these success stories about teamwork, producer relationships and cross-selling. Kudos to Dave and Carrie for their hard work, and a thank you to Bill McGehee Insurance!

Nice Job Dave! Laurin just followed up with a visit last week as well.
Great work Dave! And because of your connection, I wrote a Technology account for 8/1, visited with Bill and his team this past Friday in Louisiana, and came back with 2 more submissions! I really appreciate your work with them and I heard first hand that they appreciate you too!
