Recently our Specialty Property team (OBSP) celebrated their 10 year anniversary with OneBeacon- having joined our company in April of 2004. While they celebrate this special milestone, it is perhaps even more amazing to note that the majority of the team has actually been working together for the past 30 years, since the 80s!
And throughout those 30 years together, the Specialty Property team has maintained a consistent and unwavering underwriting philosophy. Their focus is very narrow: mono-line property on an excess basis. As a result, the premium writings are relatively small, but the bottom-line results have been significant. OBSP has produced $77m of profit and a 74.9% combined ratio from inception through 2013.
“Our biggest strength is our experienced underwriting team,” says Jim Heitkemper, President of OBSP. “Each of us understands the potential impact of the underwriting decisions we make on a daily basis. Our strategy is to stay disciplined within our narrow focus, yet be opportunistic.”
